Augustine was born on May 12th, 1838 in Kirchberg, Zwickau, Sachsen.  Augustine's father was Ephraim Schwedler and her mother was Johanne Friedericke Jacobi.  Her paternal grandfather was Benjamin Schwedler. She had a brother and a sister, named Ephraim and Ernestine.  She was the youngest of the three children.
